Will Carlos Correa return to the Twins? What happened with the Mets deal?

It’s been the saga of the offseason, with several teams vying for his signature. Now it seems the 28-year-old star may actually stay where he was in the first place.

Update:
Will Carlos Correa return to the Twins? What happened with the Mets deal?
Michael Reaves

Following what now appears to be the complete collapse of his move to the Mets, it now seems the shortstop is back in talks with the team that he was set to leave, the Minnesota Twins.

Minnesota Twins and Carlos Correa in advanced negotiations

According to reports, the Minnesota Twins could yet secure the services of Carlos Correa, with the two sides said to be accelerating the talks between them. In case you missed it, Correa had agreed in principle to a 12-year, $315 million contract with the New York Mets back on December 21st. That agreement, however, has since been hanging in the balance with both parties hashing out the details of the actual language used in the contract, as it relates to an ankle injury which Correa suffered earlier on in his career.

It’s important to note, that the Mets have not officially backed out on a Correa deal, but the franchise is known to be “growing frustrated” with negotiations. What we can now understand, is that Correa’s agent, Scott Boras, has begun the process of fielding the interests of other teams, including Correa’s most recent team, the Twins. Fans will recall, that Correa had previously agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract with the San Francisco Giants, however, that deal also fell through as a result of doubts about the aforementioned injury.

Carlos Correa with the Twins makes sense

As you likely know, Correa spent the 2022 season with the Twins. He then followed that up by signing a three-year, $105.3 million contract with two opt outs during the last offseason. Indeed, it was Correa’s impressive showing during the 2022 campaign that saw him exercise his first opt out in an effort to test the free agency market. As per reports at the time, the Twins offered Correa a 10-year contract worth $285 million just over a month ago, however, it’s worth noting that said offer was made prior to concerns being raised about his ankle.

At any rate, when we consider Correa’s history with the Twins and the fact that they were willing to offer a 10-year deal, one has to believe they know what they’re dealing with. On the other hand, with both the Giants and Mets having backed out because of their reservations about his health, it may be that the Twins opt to take a closer look. Then, there’s also the possibility that this could all be a ploy to place pressure on the Mets who haven’t officially walked away. Remember Steve Cohen’s words on the night that Correa agreed to sign with the Mets? The Mets owner stated, “We needed one more thing, and this is it. This really makes a big difference. I feel like our pitching was in good shape. We needed one more hitter. This puts us over the top.” Don’t be surprise, if we see some sort of grievance being filed if the Mets choose to formally walk away. As for Correa himself, the 28-year-old hit .291/.366/.467 with 22 home runs in 136 games last season. That’s to say, he’s definitely worth the fuss, but the question remains as to which team will get him.
