You haven’t seen anything like this in Boston since 2009: the straight steal of home that made Red Sox history
Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran proved why he’s so dangerous in the third inning of Game 2 against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday.

The Boston Red Sox capped off their doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday with a 7-3 win. During the third inning, outfielder Jarren Duran pulled off a feat that hasn’t been accomplished by a Boston player since 2009.
Duran’s epic steal for Red Sox
Duran followed up an RBI triple by stealing home plate in a dramatic play in the third inning - Boston’s first straight steal of home plate in 16 years to the day. The last to achieve that feat was Jacoby Ellsbury against the New York Yankees on April 26, 2009. He made the decision to go for it after hearing that pitcher Doug Nikhazy was working from the stretch.
“[Third base coach Kyle Hudson] heard him tell the umpire that he was working from the stretch, so I decided I was going to go on the first pitch,” Duran said. “It was just to keep the offense going and cause a little chaos. I knew I had it.”
Duran slid headfirst to home plate, slapping his right hand on the base before Bo Naylor could tag him, and the umpire called it safe. The play was confirmed after video review.
Duran’s last two steals of home were part of a double-theft last season, against the Tampa Bay Rays in May and the Chicago White Sox in June. Duran finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIS.
