The NBA All-Star Weekend is upon us and one of the most exciting events on the schedule is the 3-Point Contest. As basketball fans gear up to witness the long-range shootout, it’s important to understand the format and rules that will govern this thrilling competition. Here’s a summary of what you need to know.

2024 NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest: format

  • Eight players will compete in a two-round, timed shooting competition.
  • Ball racks are positioned at five main shooting locations around the three-point arc, with four of the racks containing NBA game balls and one multi-colored “money” ball.
  • The multi-colored “money” ball is worth two points, while NBA game balls are worth one point each.
  • A special “all money ball” rack is included, where each ball is worth two points.
  • Additionally, two ball pedestals are placed at “STARRY Range,” holding special white “STARRY” balls worth three points each.
  • Players must exhaust the ball racks and pedestals in competition order before moving on to the next shooting location.
  • A time limit of 70 seconds is set for each competitor to shoot as many of the 27 balls as possible.

2024 NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest: round structure

The first round determines the three players with the highest scores who advance to the ‘Championship Round’. The final round features three players competing in inverse order of their scores from the first round.

Tiebreakers (effectively 30 second shootoffs following the same rules) are in place both to determine final round participants and the overall champion if necessary.

As well as the 2024 NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest, basketball fans – both the avid followers and those that dip in for this more fanciful version – can also enjoy the Skills Challenge, the 3-Point shootout between Steph Curry and Sabrina Ionescu, and, of course, the Slam Dunk contest. And that’s all leading up to the big game finale on Sunday.
