The 2024 NBA All-Star weekend is underway and the activities continue today with the Skills Challenge which is split into three rounds: the 3-point and the Slam Dunk contests - events that will give basketball fans the chance to follow their favorite players very closely. Each team will compete one at a time in each round. The team with the most challenge points after the three rounds have been played will win the Skills Challenge.

Those taking part in the three-point contest include: Damian Lillard (Bucks -34.5% effectiveness), Tyrese Haliburton (Pacers - 39.6%), Jalen Brunson (Knicks - 40.6%), Donovan Mitchell (Cavaliers - 36.6%), Karl-Anthony Towns (Timberwolves - 43.8%), Lauri Markkanen (Jazz - 40.6%), Malik Beasley (Bucks - 44.7%) and Trae Young (Hawks - 37.3%).

At the moment among the favorites are Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Damian Lillard and Lauri Markkanen. All participants are given 70 seconds to shoot 27 balls from five different points around the arc. Four of the five racks contain four NBA game balls and one tri-colored moneyball. The fifth rack contains five tri-colored moneyballs. Players choose in advance where they would like to have the moneyball rack positioned. Regular game balls are worth one point and moneyballs count as two points. There are also two additional Starry Range ball pedestals located between racks 2 and 3, which are worth three points each.

Skills challenge prize money up for grabs

Sabrina Ionescu will face Stephen Curry in a different exhibition to this one. The pair will face off in a separate contest - the first ever NBA versus WNBA 3-Point Challenge, with both players shooting from the NBA line - Curry will be using the official men’s NBA ball and shooting from the perimeter of the men’s competition (7.24 meters), and Ionescu using the WNBA ball to shoot from the women’s distance (6.75 meters).

The official NBA and WNBA balls are different sizes - the NBA ball is 29.5 inches (75 cm) in circumference while the WNBA ball is slightly smaller - 29 inches (74 cm) in circumference. High school and junior leagues normally use NCAA, NBA or WNBA sized balls.

Sabrina Ionescu has been making waves in women’s basketball since an early age. The 26-year-old was born in Walnut Creek, California, and has Romanian heritage. She graduated from Miramonte High School. In 2020, she was selected as the number 1 draft pick by the New York Liberty in the WNBA draft. She has been an All-Star twice, won a World Cup with the United States, and set a high-profile milestone by winning the last WNBA three-point contest

Will the winners receive anything? The answer to that is yes! In the 3-point Contest, the winner take home a cash prize of 50,000 dollars, second place receives 35,000 dollars, while third place gets $25,000 and the next three get $10,000.
