Update:

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has defied previous warnings and will continue to celebrate in his typically controversial manner, he told reporters.

Morant had been using a gun celebration after scoring 3-point shots, a move which has drawn criticism from many including the NBA, who labelled it “inappropriate.”

However, it seems that he has now heeded the warnings of not celebrating with the firearm and changed things up: to a grenade.

During the recent 141-125 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Morant celebrated a three-pointer with a move that appeared to show him pulling the pin of an imaginary grenade and throwing it into the crowd.

“That’s my celebration now until somebody else has a problem with it, and I’ll find another one,” Morant defiantly ruled after the game. He was 5 of 13 from 3-point range in the game.

Morant in hot water over violent celebrations

The South Carolina native was fined $75,000 in April by the basketball organisation recently for performing the aforementioned gun celebration on two separate occasions, against the Heat and the Warriors; he was warned after the first celebration but continued to do so anyway.

It is not the first time that Ja Morant has drawn criticism for gun-related issues: in March 2023 the NBA banned him for 8 games after he was seen with a gun; a separate 25 game ban came at the start of the 2023-24 season after he was spotted on video holding a gun in a car.

All these incidents, report ESPN, added up when it came to the fine issued by the NBA.
