Update:

The NFL is a highly lucrative business for players, team owners, and the league’s many business partners. In fact, reported profits for the last fiscal year totalled billions of dollars.

According to Sports Business Journal's Ben Fischer, NFL Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President Christine Dorfler told owners at their annual meeting last month that the league generated $23 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year.

The same report indicates that this revenue will be shared among the 32 teams, with each franchise expected to receive approximately $416 million from media deals, sponsorships, and licensed products. That’s an 8.9% increase over last year, when teams received $382 million each.

As a result, more money is expected to flow through the league, which could lead to a higher salary cap in 2026 than in 2025. For the upcoming season, the salary cap was initially projected at $281.5 million, but was ultimately set at $279.2 million.

How can the NFL make even more money?

According to Fischer, the primary way the NFL could boost revenue and meet Commissioner Roger Goodell’s 2010 goal of surpassing $25 billion by 2025 is by expanding the regular-season schedule to include an additional game. However, this change would require approval from both team owners and the NFL Players Association.

Another potential revenue booster is renegotiating the broadcast rights deal. The NFL has the option to opt out of the current agreement after the 2029 season. Back in March 2021, the league signed an 11-year broadcast deal worth $110 billion.
