Update:

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is confident that he can return in style after a long lay off due to injury.

His big-money move to Cleveland was a gamble by both him and the franchise that imploded in the most catastrophic fashion imaginable after he was ruled out for the 2025 season in January with a recurring issue that affected his right achilles; even Browns owner Jimmy Haslam admitted that the club “took a big swing and miss” with the player who, when he has been fit, has been ineffective.

We thought we had the quarterback; we didn’t”, Haslam recently admitted, “and we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him, so we’ve got to dig ourselves out of that hole... [The trade] was an entire organisation decision and it ends with Dee [Haslam] and I, so hold us accountable.”

‘Everyone’s doubting me, everyone don’t believe in me’

The Browns traded three first-round picks to the Houston Texans for Watson and handed him an eye-watering five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract: at the time it was a league record for guarantees that now, in hindsight, looks misjudged to say the least.

Watson took to social media where he posted a video along with the following caption: “Everyone’s doubting me. Everyone don’t believe in me. Everyone don’t think that I can get back to where I was. But I know and I believe the work that I put in, what I believe in myself. The peace that I’ve been channeling these last couple months, I know I’m going to be way better than before.”

It seems that Watson, who served an 11-game suspension in 2022 after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage sessions, is using the backlash from frustrated fans to get back fit and firing for the Browns.

ESPN calculate that the Browns “still owe Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons and have $173 million in cap hits remaining on his contract”, which explains the hugely positive comments coming from the team.
