Though details are still emerging, there is nothing good about the allegations being brought against the Rockets player. Even more so when you consider that he’s been on the wrong side of the law on several occasions before.

Kevin Porter Jr. arrested for assaulting girlfriend, WNBA’s Kysre Gondrezick

According to reports on Monday morning, Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. was arrested in New York City for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick. It is understood, that domestic violence charges are pending against Porter Jr., who is currently being detained at the NYPD’s 17th Precinct in Midtown. As per reports, Porter Jr. was returning to a hotel at which both he and Gondrezick were staying, after a night out. Reportedly upset with the hour at which he returned, Gondrezick proceeded to lock the door. It is alleged that after gaining access to the room with the assistance of security staff, the 23-year-old “beat up” the former Indiana Fever player. There have been no further details given, however, the NBA itself released a statement in which spokesperson Mike Bass said the league is aware of reports and is “gathering more information.”

Kevin Porter Jr has been in trouble before

If the allegations against him weren’t already sinister enough, then it’s worth noting that Porter has actually been here before and more than once. In August 2020, Porter was accused of punching a woman and pulling her hair while in downtown Cleveland. The woman involved in the alleged altercation claimed that Porter ripped out her weave while she was in an argument with Porter’s sister and that he also punched her in the face. Porter was never charged for his alleged involvement. There was also November of that same year when he was arrested for possession of a loaded gun after being involved in a single-car accident. A player for the Cleveland Cavaliers at the time, Porter was released after posting a $4,000 bond.

It was those same Cavs from which Porter was traded to the Rockets in 2021, following what was reportedly an angry outburst in the team’s locker room after learning that his locker had been issued to a teammate. From yelling to eventually throwing food, the situation escalated to the point that Cavs GM, Koby Altman was forced to intervene, reportedly stating at the time that Porter remained “combative.” Porter was told shortly after the incident to collect his things and leave, while his teammates were advised that he would no longer be a member of the roster. Just four days later, Porter was offloaded to the Rockets.

What lies ahead for Kevin Porter Jr?

Though it remains unclear at this point as to what will happen where Porter’s future in the NBA and with the Rockets is concerned, what has become clear is that his alleged actions have not been taken lightly. Indeed, following news of Porter’s arrest, Kysre Gondrezick’s sister took to social media where she made open threats against the Rockets’ guard. To that end, it may well be that Porter’s pending charges and his uncertain future in professional basketball are the least of his problems.
