Update:

The Sun is shining on San Antonio as the Spurs are on the verge of welcoming back their towering superstar, Victor Wembanyama, for one of the biggest games of their season, a high-stakes Emirates NBA Cup semifinal against the Oklahoma City Thunder this Saturday in Las Vegas.

The French phenom has been sidelined with a left calf strain since mid-November, missing the past dozen games, but recent reports suggest his return might be imminent.

Wemby was seen participating in full court work during recent practices and notably taking part in pregame warmups without extra protection on said injured calf.

Coach Johnson: Wemby “had a very good day”

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson described his progress as encouraging, noting that the 21-year-old “had a very good day” in recent on-court drills and that the team would closely monitor his reaction in the coming days before making a final decision on his availability.

San Antonio made the semifinals with a stunning 132-119 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. That victory came largely without Wembanyama, as Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox and Keldon Johnson stepped up in his absence. The Spurs have impressively gone 9-3 while their superstar sat in the recovery bay.

“I think Victor would tell you we have a deep team, and we rely upon playing together as a team,” Johnson added. “He may be the biggest puzzle piece, but he needs everybody else to complete the puzzle.”

Despite their lack of struggles without Wemby, his potential return would dramatically boost San Antonio’s prospects; the Thunder enter the semifinal as one of the most dominant teams in NBA Cup history, riding high on a lengthy winning streak.
