Summer League tickets at $2K? Fans break the bank for Cooper Flagg - Bronny James clash
The Las Vegas Summer League brings together rookie, sophomore and G League players ahead of the start of NBA team practice sessions.
Typically, NBA Summer League games have a limited amount of interest and tickets tend to be available on the cheap.
The tournament - also known as the Las Vegas Summer League - is a strictly ‘off-season’ competition that brings together rookie, sophomore and G League players to get some reps for their teams. It’s a testing ground for lesser-known young stars, but this year’s there’s a couple of big-name players taking to the court.
On Thursday evening Cooper Flagg will make his debut for the Dallas Mavericks. That would be a big draw in any context, but it’s made even more appealing by the fact that he will come up against the LA Lakers and Bronny James.
The game will be played at the Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas and tickets have been flying. As of Tuesday, two days before the game, the cheapest lower bowl seats are going for $650 on TickPick. Anyone looking for a courtside seat will have to pay around $2,500, for a Summer League game!
The competition will run from July 10 to July 20, giving Flagg little over a week to get some on-court minutes alongside some of his new teammates. He is expected to become a key player from the start for this much-changed Dallas team and the front office have no doubts ability his ability to lead the organization forward.
“When people talk about him, they don’t talk about basketball with him,” Mavs general manager Nico Harrison said. “They talk about all the intangibles. When you have a player who’s that good and they talk about the intangibles, that’s a guy who’s going to add to your culture.”
Head coach Jason Kidd was also full of praise for Flagg and revealed that he is looking to challenge his new star on his debut. The pressure will be on the No. 1 draft pick from the start and Kidd wants to push him.
“I want to put him at the point guard. I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts, being able to run the show, being able to play the 2, play the 3,” the coach explained. “He’s comfortable playing that, but we want to push, and I think he’s going to respond in a positive way.”
