Dallas Mavericks continue offseason rebuild with $60 million extension

The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly close to announcing a new deal for center Daniel Gafford, offering three-year extension as part of the team’s revolution this offseason.

The 26-year-old is set to sign a new deal worth $60 million, a significant investment and one that suggests a real show of faith from the front office.

Gafford was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 2019 but found more regular playing time after a move to the Washington Wizards two years later. In February 2024 he was traded to the Mavericks and he had an immediate impact, showing incredible shooting accuracy on the way to an NBA Finals appearance.

In March 2024 Gafford made 33 consecutive field goals, second only to Wilt chamberlain (35) in NBA history. He ended the season as the league’s field goal percentage leader, sinking 348 of his 480 attempts (72.5%).

“Gaff has been important, being able to start, bring him off the bench, start,” head coach Jason Kidd said of Gafford after his arrival. “He’s about the team. He’s giving us something that we haven’t had here.”

“When you talk about Gaff, he’s been mentioned with one of the best in the world to do it, and that’s Wilt [Chamberlain], and that just doesn’t happen every day. He’s been a big part of our success.”

In the 2024/25 season Gafford will be just one piece of a revamped frontcourt for the Mavs, which already includes ten-time NBA All-Star Anthony Davis and 21-year-old Dereck Lively II. Later this week, projected No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg is expected to join that stacked list of options.
