Who could replace Vogel in the Phoenix Suns hotseat?

Frank Vogel lasted just one of the five years he signed up for with the Phoenix Suns. The change of coach is a direct decision of the owner.

The Suns parked the project with their three supermen with the man who had originally been chosen to bring it to fruition. The franchise has decided to usher Frank Vogel, champion with the Lakers four years ago, out of the door - and long before schedule.

Vogel dismissed and owed $24 million

The differences that he has found in the offensive criteria with Kevin Durant, who in the end sets the times like the figure that he is, have been part of a decision that, even though it was minimally expected, is still shocking. The coach signed a five-season contract last year - and that arrangement is now in shreds.

The official movement gives way to a new era. Predictably, one with the same three reference players: Durant plus Booker and Beal, but surrounded by other kinds of players. Whoever comes in to occupy the bench will be of a similar profile - according to Adrian Wojnarowski, from ESPN, the favorite is Mike Budenholzer - also a champion, in his case with the Bucks in 2021 (and precisely against the Suns). Negotiations are reported to nearing an end.

The Suns have very little salary margin to make big-name signings. And according to local Phoenix sources, they have another problem - the owner of the franchise, Mat Ishbia, is making decisions that are too risky and which other managers down the chain of command should really be doing. The bet on Vogel was suggested, not just approved by him, therefore he felt the responsibility to fire him and thus assume his part of the blame for it not working out. In the back offices disagreements are as ride as they are out on court.

How does Vogel’s sacking affect other NBA teams?

The NBA coaching merry-go-round is still to be defined in many places. But there have already been some changes. The first involved Jordi Fernández joining the Brooklyn Nets in an historic move for Spanish basketball. In the last few hours, the mystery has also been cleared up with the Charlotte Hornets - they are set to hire Charles Lee, who has worked as an assistant for the Celtics. And more movement is expected because the Wizards and the Lakers are also searching for a new coach.

For the Angelenos the panorama may have changed. With Budenholzer out of contention, the list of potential candidates includes Kenny Atkinson, JJ Redick, Micah Nori and David Adelman.

All of them have experience in the NBA, apart from Redick, a former player who has spent the past of years working as an analyst for ESPN. While he has no experience of leading a team, what might work in Redick’s favor is his friendship with the team’s star player LeBron James. In March, the pair launched their Mind the Game podcast in which they spend an hour talking shop and discussing the finer points of the game.
