Prosecutors in Washington have released a statement saying that charges have not been filed against former NBA All-Star Shawn Kemp after he was arrested for involvement in a drive-by shooting.

The six-time All-Star and 1994 world champion with the United States had been arrested on Wednesday, accused of being involved in a shooting that occurred in the city of Tacoma, Washington. Authorities are releasing Kemp from prison pending further investigation into the incident.

Pierce County Sheriff spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss said the 53-year-old former player was booked on a felony charge of drive-by shooting a little before 6 p.m.

Shortly before Kemp’s arrest, the Tacoma Police Department had reported through social media an incident between two vehicles near a local shopping center in which shots had been fired. In the end no one was injured, but a weapon was recovered that allowed the investigation to be opened.

Who is Shawn Kemp?

Kemp made his NBA debut during the 1989-90 season when he was 20 years old, and had never played college basketball. He became known for his high-flying athletic dunks.

He played 14 seasons in the NBA, spending his early years with the Seattle SuperSonics, with whom he played in the NBA Finals in 1996 against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

The power forward also played with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Portland Trail Blazers. His last stint in the NBA was with Orlando, with whom he played his 1000th NBA game. Kemp was named to the NBA All-Star team six consecutive times, from 1993 to 1998.
