Why isn’t Zion Williamson playing against the 76ers tonight?

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson has only just made his return to action after an injury absence but won’t be taking to the court against the Philadelphia 76ers tonight (Friday, 10 January) for an entirely different reason.

The Pelicans have decided to suspend the 24-year-old for a violation of team policies, with Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin explaining the player had failed to meet team standards.

Although the Pelicans didn’t reveal precisely what Williamson had done, the forward himself released a statement explaining the reason for his suspension, which he fully accepted.

Williamson gives reason for Pelicans suspension

“I take full responsibility for this suspension. I’ve worked extremely hard in rehab to get healthy to deliver for this team. There is no excuse for being late to team activities. I have apologized to [Pelicans owner] Mrs. [Gayle] Benson and my teammates and coaches and I also owe an apology to the fans. I can and will be better as a teammate and member of this organization.”

Sources close to NBA insider Chris Haynes claimed the two-time NBA All-Star had been late for “multiple practices,” as well as the flight to Philadelphia for Friday’s game.

How many games is Williamson suspended for? When will he be back?

Williamson’s suspension will only cover the matchup against the 76ers at Wells Fargo Center and he will be available when New Orleans face the Celtics on Sunday (January 12).
