2023 NCAA March Madness Sweet Sixteen: Who’s remaining in the tournament?

March Madness’ Sweet 16 round begins this Thursday, March 23 and it is truly mad which teams are left in the tournament at this point. Defending champions Kansas are gone, the last seven national champions are gone, and none of the conference champions from the Big Ten, ACC, Big East, or Pac-12 are in the tournament anymore. In fact, nearly every team from the ACC and Big Ten are gone. Only the ACC no. 5 seed Miami Hurricanes and the Big Ten’s no. 7 Michigan State Spartans remain. The SEC and Big East have the most teams remaining (three), something the SEC rarely gets to boast about.

There are 12 teams left who have never won the NCAA tournament and seven who have never made it to the Final Four. Anything can happen in March Madness and this year’s tournament has so far been proof of that. A No. 16 beat a No. 1 team for just the second time in tournament history, with Farleigh Dickinson ousting Purdue. No. 15 Princeton knocked out No. 2 Arizona, and Princeton is still surviving in the Sweet 16.
