The holidays are here, and you know what that means. Eggnog, turkey, presents, warm fires, and of course, the centerpiece of the entire season of festivities. College football’s Bowl games!

We have come through the first week of Bowl games, and already we have seen some amazing action, with the Cricket Celebration Bowl heading into overtime to see North Carolina Central just edge out Jackson State 41-34 in Deion Sanders’ final game as head coach for the Tigers.

Now we move onto the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in the Superdome, which will pit Conference USA’s Western Kentucky vs. Sun Belt co-champions South Alabama in a clash that will see the one of the best Group of Five offenses facing one of the best Group of Five defenses.

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are looking for their third nine-win season in four years, while the South Alabama Jaguars are riding their best ever season under their second-year coach, Kane Wommack.

The matchup

This game is likely to be one of the best chess matches you will see this season, with Western Kentucky’s offense averaging 35.8 points per game facing South Alabama’s defense that has allowed only 19.4 points per game. An unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.

The Hilltoppers quarterback Austin Reed transferred from West Florida and has committed to return next year, giving their offense a mental and morale boost that will carry them a long way in their attack.

Having said that, WK haven’t faced a defense as stingy as the Jags this season and getting the passes through their tight coverage will require a steely nerve and precision passing.

While South Alabama hasn’t put up the points that Western Kentucky have, they have managed to lean on their defense to keep them in the game all season, leading to their program’s best-ever season.

The Hilltoppers’ defense has proven to be vulnerable to the rush and the Jaguars’ offensive line is a much improved squad who can bully their way into yardage.

In the end, the South Alabama defense will do enough to shut down the Western Kentucky attack and we are looking for a Jaguars win to cap their first 11-victory season.
