Michigan vs UConn: 2026 Championship Game preview

Having reached the Final Four with a dramatic Elite Eight comeback against the Duke Blue Devils, the No. 2-seeded Huskies booked their spot in the National Championship Game with a rather more straightforward victory over the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday. At Lucas Oil Stadium, Dan Hurley’s men prevailed 71-62, maintaining the program’s near-perfect National Semifinal record.

In its eight Final Four appearances, UConn has only once failed to progress to the National Championship. And, ominously for Michigan, the Huskies have so far been victorious every time they have contested the title game.

Trophy winners at the 2023 and 2024 editions of March Madness, UConn can now make it three championships in the last four years - and extend its all-time title tally to seven. UConn’s current haul of six championships is only bettered by two teams: the Kentucky Wildcats, who have eight titles, and the UCLA Bruins, who boast an unmatched 11.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines are chasing a first NCAA championship since they won their sole title back in 1989. Dusty May’s team reached their first Championship Game in eight years with a dominant win over the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, triumphing 91-73 over their fellow top seed.

While UConn has a 100% record in March Madness Championship Games, Michigan’s experience of the title matchup has been very different: the Wolverines are currently on a run of four straight final defeats (in 1992, 1993, 2013 and 2018).
