Update:

March Madness delivered one of its first true shockers of the tournament on Sundau, and it came with a moment that was as emotional as it was dramatic. No. 9 seed Iowa Hawkeyes pulled off a stunning 73-72 upset over defending champions Florida Gators in the second round, thanks to a clutch three-pointer from Alvaro Folgueiras in the final seconds.

But it was what happened after the buzzer that may resonate even more.

A game-winning shot that changed everything

With under 10 seconds remaining, Florida appeared to have control, leading 72-70 and on the verge of escaping with a win. Instead, Iowa calmly broke the Gators’ full-court pressure. The ball found Folgueiras alone in the corner, and he didn’t hesitate.

The shot dropped with just 4.5 seconds left, flipping the game and sending Iowa to the Sweet 16. Florida never managed a final attempt, sealing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far and marking the first time a No. 1 seed has fallen in this year’s bracket.

From Spain to March Madness hero

Folgueiras’ journey makes the moment even more powerful. The Malaga, Spain native moved to the United States as a teenager to chase his basketball dreams, a leap that came with sacrifice from his family, especially his mother.

After the game, emotions poured out. He dedicated the moment to his parents, including his father, who passed away when he was young.

“I’m so lucky to have her as a mom...She sent a 16-year-old kid to America without knowing any English… just dreams,” Folgueiras said of his mother. “This is for her, and my dad, too.”

His mother, who was in attendance, embraced him on the court, a full-circle moment years in the making. Folgueiras spoke about how his mother’s resilience continues to inspire him in basketball and beyond.

“When things get tough, I think about her,” he said. “She’s a fighter… I’m so lucky to have her.”

Florida’s early exit stuns the bracket

For Florida, the loss marks a shocking end to their title defense. The Gators entered the tournament as a No. 1 seed and had looked dominant early, including a blowout win in the first round. But they struggled to put Iowa away after building momentum late.

Iowa, meanwhile, showed resilience of their own, overcoming a blown double-digit lead in the second half before delivering in the closing moments.

What’s next?

With the win, Iowa advances to the Sweet 16 for the first time in over a decade and will face the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the next round.

For Folgueiras, the spotlight will only grow, but no matter what comes next, his game-winner and the story behind it have already secured a place among this year’s defining March Madness moments.
