TCU vs Georgia: The lay of the land

The reigning national champion Georgia Bulldogs, are now just one win away from becoming the first program to win back-to-back national titles in a decade. On Monday night, they will take on the TCU Horned Frogs in the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. If you’re wondering, the last program to win consecutive national championships was Alabama in 2011-12. Just two other programs since 1980 – USC (2003-04) and Nebraska (1994-95) – have successfully won two straight titles. This is all to say, it’s not the norm.

Ranked No. 1 and sitting on a 14-0 record, Georgia is highly favored to join that elite club, but it won’t be easy. TCU who are ranked 3rd in the country and have a record of 13-1 are trying to win their program’s first title since 1938 and given the way they took down Michigan 51-45 in the Fiesta Bowl, they definitely have what it takes to do so. It would be a mistake to miss this one. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Stetson Bennett will be key for Georgia

If one thing has become clear about Georgia this year, it’s that they’ve got a sensational talent in Stetson Bennett. At 5-foot-11, Bennett is a former walk-on and junior college transfer who is now well known to us all. As a starter for the Bulldogs, he’s got an eye catching 28-3 record. Where this season specifically is concerned, Bennett ranks ninth in the country in passing yards (3,823) and 10th in completion percentage (68.1%). In case you didn’t know, he was actually a Heisman Trophy finalist and finished fourth in the voting.

TCU’s Max Duggan is also an incredible QB

The quarterback matchup in this game is definitely going to be something to watch, as TCU have an excellent signal caller in Max Duggan. Duggan leads the Big 12 and ranks 10th in the nation in passing efficiency (162.3). What’s more is that the senior from Council Bluffs, Iowa, also has 27 career rushing touchdowns, which ranks eighth in program history. That’s all to say he’s as versatile as they come. Yet, it’s got to be said that Duggan isn’t the only weapon that the Horned Frogs can rely on. Linebacker Dee Winters is an absolute beast.

While it’s true that everything comes down to the game itself, with spreads and statistics only telling you so much, it’s clear that it’s going to take a lot for TCU to prevent the Bulldogs from clinching their second-straight National Championship.
