Update:

With Mikel Brown Jr. sidelined to start the NCAA Tournament, the spotlight now shifts to a lesser-known name who could define Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball’s run: Adrian Wooley.

The former Kennesaw State Owls transfer has become a key piece for Louisville this season and now, he’s stepping into the biggest role of his career at the most important time.

Opportunity knocks for Adrian Wooley

Wooley has started every game Brown has missed this season, providing stability in the backcourt while Louisville adjusts without their leading scorer.

On the surface, his season averages - 8.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game - might not jump off the page. But those numbers tell a different story when he’s in the starting lineup.

As a starter, Wooley is averaging 11 points per game, and his production has trended upward recently. He’s scored at least 14 points in three of his last five outings, showing increased confidence as his role expands.

Replacing a player like Brown is all about adapting. Brown is a high-volume scorer and playmaker, capable of taking over games. Wooley brings a different skill set - balance, effort, and a willingness to do the smaller things that keep an offense functioning. That could actually help Louisville in a tournament setting, where depth and adaptability tend to matter just as much as star power.

A defining March moment

March Madness has a long history of unexpected heroes, players who step into larger roles and deliver when it matters most. Wooley now finds himself in exactly that position.

With Louisville opening against the South Florida Bulls, the Cardinals will lean heavily on his ability to manage the game, contribute offensively, and help stabilize a lineup missing its centerpiece.

If Louisville is going to make a deep run, it may ultimately depend on how players like Wooley respond to the moment. He doesn’t need to be Mikel Brown Jr. - he just needs to be effective enough to keep them in the competition.
