Another contract question for Cowboys: Tyler Smith joins Micah Parsons in limbo
The Dallas Cowboys players arrived in Oxnard ahead of training camp, but there are still looming questions around the contracts of two key players.
The Dallas Cowboys players have already started arriving to Oxnard, California to begin training camp ahead of the 2025 season. Like last year, however, contract talks are creating a gray cloud in the atmosphere.
While linebacker Micah Parson’s contract extension has been the main focus of offseason talks, offensive lineman Tyler Smith is also due an extension that’s yet to come.
Dallas playing the waiting game with its stars - again
While neither Smith nor Parsons is expected to hold out from practices during training camp, Smith addressed the lack of progress on a contract extension and made it clear he’s staying focused on football.
“That’s not up to me. I can only control what I can control, and that’s coming in and working,” Smith told reporters.
The 2022 first-round pick has quickly become a cornerstone of the Cowboys’ offensive line. In his first three NFL seasons, Smith has started nearly every game, logging over 3,000 snaps and earning two Pro Bowl selections and Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2023.
Despite his consistent play and minimal penalties (only two flags last season), no extension talks appear to be underway yet. Smith enters 2025 with a base salary of $2.5 million and a cap hit of $4.6 million, with a team option in 2026.
This follows a broader pattern in Dallas - star pass rusher Micah Parsons is also waiting on an extension, despite expectations of being among the league’s highest-paid defenders. Parsons, however, is still expected to report to camp.
While there are no contract holdouts for now, both Smith and Parsons highlight a looming issue: Dallas has rising stars who want to get paid - and the front office is taking its time.
