Big decisions for the Giants: Does Brian Daboll know his starting QB?
The New York Giants have a stacked quarterback room with veteran Russell Wilson alongside rookie star Jaxson Dart.

The 2024 season for the New York Giants was a major disappointment, one that saw the team slump to a 3-14 record and former player Saquon Barkley lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl.
However there is optimism surrounding the team for the 2025 season, built in part on a stacked quarterback room. The Giants brought in veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and drafted Jaxson Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Combined with Tommy DeVito and Jameis Winston, the Giants now have real strength in that crucial position. What’s less clear, however, is exactly how they will get the best out of that depth.
Speaking to reporters this week head coach Brian Daboll was full of praise for Dart, who has primarily worked with the second-team offense during his first sessions with the team.
“He’s done excellent picking up information,” Daboll told reporters. “It’s really good to have Russ and Jameis and even Tommy because Tommy has been in this system for a few years here. Kind of the head statesman in terms of that with all the adjustments that take place and the calls. He’s fit right in with those guys. He’s smart, aggressive with the football, which I like.”

That sentiment was shared by Giants QB coach Shea Tierney, who praised Dart’s adaptability in his first few weeks as a professional.
“It’s been impressive to see the last couple weeks just how he’s prepared and made the transition to becoming a pro,” Tierney said. “He’s done a really good job of coming in here and understanding what he’s got to do to make himself a pro and approaching it the right way.”
But despite those positive early signs, it does not look like Dart will be the starter at the beginning of 2025. So far Russell Wilson has worked exclusively with the first-team offense and the 36-year-old is certainly in pole position to claim the starter’s jersey.
He was brought in by the Giants on a one-year deal, suggesting that the team is just looking for a player to bridge the gap before Dart is ready to take over. After promising early performances it looks like Dart may well be ready to supplant Wilson at some point this season but the ten-time Pro Bowler will not be giving up that spot without a fight.
