Update:

The Las Vegas Raiders needed to solidify the quarterback position, and they did so with a big move that saw them trade for Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks. They also solidified part of their defense by extending pass rusher Maxx Crosby.

Raiders making big moves

Geno Smith flourished under coach Pete Carroll when he was with the Seahawks and they’re hoping they’ll flourish together again in Las Vegas. In return for Smith, the Raiders gave Seattle a 2025 third-round pick.

Initially, the Seahawks wanted to give the Raiders both Smith and wide receiver DK Metcalf in exchange for defensive end Maxx Crosby. The Raiders shot that down and now we see why. Obviously, they think highly of their four-time Pro Bowler as they instead extended him to a three-year contract that made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

Crosby agreed to a three-year, $106.5 million contract extension with $91.5 million guaranteed, an average of $35.5 million per season. General manager John Spytek told him the extension is “not for what you’ve done, but for what you’re about to do.” He also said the deal with Crosby is setting the tone for a new era in the Raiders franchise.

We want to grow this to a place that people want to be,” Spytek said. “It’s no secret, it hasn’t been sunshine and roses around here forever, but when he makes a commitment to the Raiders like this, and he stands for everything Coach and I and this new staff, and everybody talks about, he signs up for it. I think that speaks volumes, and I hope it’s noticed in our locker room. I hope it’s noticed around the league. And our expectation is we want people to want to be here. We want people, once they get here, to want to stay here. And so, to us, it just made a lot of sense to get it done now.”

With those two deals done, the Raiders still have areas to address, including the offensive line and wide receiver, which we can expect to see addressed during the draft next month.
