Update:

Teammates, family, and friends can rest easier knowing that BJ Thompson is on the men. While his future in football remains uncertain at such an early stage, the reality is that his health is the most important thing at this time.

BJ Thompson is awake and responsive

There is no way to overstate the relief that the Chiefs will be feeling on Friday. Just one day after defensive end BJ Thompson went into cardiac arrest after suffering a seizure on the field during a special teams meeting, his agent, Chris Turnage, was able to confirm that the 27-year-old is awake and responsive. This of course is a very positive turn of events when considering that just 24 hours ago, Thompson was unconscious.

Where the Chiefs are concerned, training was suspended following the incident on Thursday with Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo later addressing the media. “Let me say this before I say anything, I’m thinking about BJ right now. It was scary. I think the guys were a little scared, I know I was. But I prayed a lot and (head athletic trainer) Rick (Burkholder) and his team did a wonderful job. But everyone, you know, from a man to a person to a woman, because we have female coaches, they’ve been great, they’ve done a great job. So we’re crossing our fingers.”

For his part, Thompson was selected out of Stephen F. Austin State University in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He made just one appearance in his rookie season. It is expected that the Chiefs will resume their regular training regime from next week when they begin their mandatory minicamp, which is set to run from June 11th to 13th. Following the conclusion of the minicamp, the team will have a bit of a break until the start of training camp in late July. At this point, we can only hope for Thompson’s speedy recovery.
