Following his involvement in an accident that caused serious injury to a young girl, the Chiefs’ assistant coach has now been sentenced, but is his punishment adequate enough relative to the tragedy that occurred?

Chiefs’ Britt Reid sentenced to three years in prison for DWI

According to reports, Britt Reid, former Kansas City Chiefs assistant and son of head coach Andy Reid, has been sentenced to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a felony DWI charge. The news comes, following Reid’s trial for his involvement in a crash which occurred on the side of an entrance ramp to Interstate 435 in Kansas City on February 4th, 2021. Per reports, Reid crashed his truck into a vehicle which was carrying five-year-old Ariel Young. Sadly, Young was was seriously injured and suffered a traumatic brain injury, which resulted in her being in a coma for 11 days.

It is understood, that Reid admitted to attending officers that he had been drinking, however, he claimed he did not see the vehicles because their lights were off. According to authorities at the time, Reid was travelling at a speed 18 mph more than the posted limit of 65 mph. Where alcohol is concerned, reports indicate that Reid’s blood alcohol content was .113, which is five points over the legal limit.

What did Britt Reid say about his actions?

As mentioned before, Reid actually entered a plea deal with prosecutors in the hopes of receiving no more than four years in prison for actions. Further to that, he also expressed clear remorse for his role in what ultimately led to Young’s severe injuries. “Every time I see my daughter, I think about Ariel and how my decision affected her so deeply and her family,” Reid said. Understandably, Young’s family was said to be “outraged” by the allowance for Reid’s plea deal, which of course resulted in a more lenient punishment.
