Update:

Tyreek Hill’s release by the Miami Dolphins has set off a flurry of reaction across the NFL, including one of his most prominent former teammates.

Tyreek Hill is a free agent - Here’s who Chris Jones wants him to sign with

Hill, 31, becomes an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NFL career after the Dolphins made a series of cuts aimed at saving salary-cap space, including $22.8 million by releasing Hill.

The move ends a four-year stint in Miami in which Hill was one of the NFL’s most productive receivers, earning Pro Bowl honors and setting franchise receiving records, but also saw his 2025 season cut short due to a dislocated knee and torn ACL.

In an emotional farewell post on Instagram after his release, Hill thanked the Dolphins organization and fans, and vowed that “The Cheetah will be back”, signaling he still plans to play again once he’s healthy.

Minutes after news broke that Hill was cut on Monday, February 16, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones took to X with a succinct message to the star wide receiver: “@cheetah it’s ⏰.”

Jones’ post, tagging Hill by his social handle and using the clock emoji in place of words, was widely interpreted as a call for the eight-time Pro Bowler to consider a return to the Kansas City Chiefs, where the two players were teammates from 2016 through 2021 and won Super Bowl LIV together.

Jones’ tweet instantly sparked speculation among Chiefs fans and NFL observers about a potential Hill homecoming. There are reasons such a reunion makes sense on paper.

Hill and Jones came into the league together in 2016 and were part of the Chiefs’ offensive core during multiple deep playoff runs and a championship. Returning to play with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy could help recreate parts of that past success.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler has mentioned the Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers, where Hill’s former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is now offensive coordinator, as plausible landing spots for the free agent wideout.

Challenges to a reunion

That said, not everyone is convinced a Chiefs return is realistic or wise. Some analysts warn that nostalgia alone isn’t a strategy, especially given Hill’s injury status and the Chiefs’ own financial constraints.

Kansas City is currently projected to be well over the salary cap, and signing a high-profile free agent like Hill, especially one returning from a major knee injury, could complicate offseason planning.

Additionally, while Hill has been one of the league’s biggest playmakers over the past decade, there are questions about how quickly he can return to form after his injury and whether his best years might now be behind him.
