DK Metcalf, Steelers receiver, explains why he believes today’s NFL is changing for the worse: “It’s becoming soft”
The Steelers receiver opens up on fines, flags and why modern rule enforcement clashes with the violent reality of football.

As I watched NFL Red Zone on Sunday there were a few times I let out an involuntary noise as the hits came in... and they came in hard!
Along with the occasional “ooof!” there’d even be an “ouchie” or two. This is pretty customary for my weekend football viewing, so the idea that I’d be listening to DK Metcalf speaking about how the game’s going soft was not what I expected.
“Football is a gladiator sport”
Speaking on the Christian Kuntz Podcast, the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver made it clear he believes the league has drifted away from what he believes football fundamentally is.
Metcalf framed the issue around physicality and intent, describing the game as combat rather than performance art. “Football’s a gladiator sport,” he said, adding that the edge required to survive for 60 minutes cannot coexist with constant restraint. For Metcalf, aggression is not optional. It is the job.
Fines and flags that punish effort
One of his biggest frustrations involves discipline for plays he considers basic execution. Metcalf pointed to fines for finishing blocks as proof of the shift. “I’ve gotten fined for pancaking a guy,” he said, after it was ruled “away from the play.” His reaction was blunt. “I don’t like what football is becoming. It’s becoming soft.”
Metcalf also criticized taunting rules that penalize emotional expression after plays. “I know the rules,” he said, “but fix that.”
Despite the edge, Metcalf emphasized the code he plays by. During games, opponents are “the enemy,” but once the clock hits zero, respect returns. That balance, he believes, is being lost as the league legislates intensity out of the sport.
Next up for the Steelers, it’s a tasty Sunday trip to Detroit to face the Lions. You’ll be able to follow the build-up and action live right here on AS USA with our inimitable Dane Arlauckas.
