Eagles’ postseason failure forces first major move
Twelve months after winning the Super Bowl, Philadelphia was eliminated from the postseason in the Wild Card round by the 49ers.
The Philadelphia Eagles made a franchise-shaping decision as their NFL season came to a close. As the organization turns the page toward the next league cycle, the team announced a significant coaching change following a year that produced mixed results.
While several players posted eye-catching individual numbers, the offense never consistently reflected the overall talent of the roster. The message from the top was unmistakable. Accountability was required, and a change in direction was unavoidable.
Nick Sirianni fires OC Kevin Patullo
The move was announced Tuesday and came directly from head coach Nick Sirianni, who met personally with Kevin Patullo, the team’s offensive coordinator to explain where the franchise was headed. The Eagles publicly acknowledged the professionalism and personal qualities Patullo brought to the job, but they also made clear that the goals set at the start of the season were not met.
“I have decided to make a change at offensive coordinator,” Sirianni said in a statement released by the team. “I met with Kevin today to discuss the difficult decision, as he is a great coach who has my utmost respect. He has been integral to this team’s success over the last five years, not only to the on-field product but also behind the scenes as a valued leader for our players and this organization. I have no doubt he will continue to have a successful coaching career.”
Sirianni also took ownership of the bigger picture. “Ultimately, when we fall short of our goals that responsibility falls on my shoulders,” he said.
Patullo joined the Eagles in 2021 as part of Sirianni’s original staff. Early on, he served as the team’s passing game coordinator before later adding the role of associate head coach. After Philadelphia’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX to close the 2024 season, he was promoted to run the offense in full.
Philadelphia’s puzzling offensive numbers
From a purely statistical standpoint, the offense delivered historic production in 2025. Philadelphia posted the best red zone efficiency in franchise history, scoring touchdowns on 70.5 percent of its trips inside the 20. The Eagles also became one of the few recent teams to feature two 1,000-yard receivers and a tight end with double-digit touchdowns. Ball security improved, and the running game benefited from the impact of Saquon Barkley.
Still, the broader evaluation told a different story. The Eagles finished 24th in the NFL in total offense and ranked 19th in points scored. That gap between potential and weekly performance ultimately defined Patullo’s tenure.
After just one season as offensive coordinator, Kevin Patullo is out, as the Eagles look to reset an offense they believe should be among the league’s elite.
