Fans torch Jerry Jones after tone-deaf quote about Cowboys’ defense struggles
It shouldn’t be shocking to learn that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones cares more about the money-making business than the game of football, and yet...

The Dallas Cowboys have the worst defense in the league in 2025, but instead of working on that, billionaire owner Jerry Jones is focused on getting even richer. And he admitted as much. Out loud.
Jerry Jones’ $100B gas quote sparks outrage amongst Cowboys fans
Billionaires don’t become that way by accident. Business comes first, even if it makes you one of the most hated NFL owners in the business. Jerry Jones embodies that, and he doesn’t hide the fact that money (and oftentimes, ego) comes first in the decisions he makes surrounding the Dallas Cowboys.
But in a recent interview, his blunt quote about the Cowboys’ defense has fans in disbelief. Jones isn’t fixing his struggling defense, because he’s busy drilling into a massive new business venture.
The 83-year-old has invested $1 billion into Comstock Resources, a Texas-based natural gas company in which he already owns a majority stake. Jones believes the new drilling initiative could tap into a $100 billion natural gas opportunity, telling The Wall Street Journal, “That’s why I’m talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Dallas Cowboys.”

The quote comes as the Cowboys sit at 3-4-1, with one of the NFL’s worst defenses after trading away Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. While fans are hoping Jones spends at the trade deadline (November 4) to rescue the season, he seems more focused on striking it rich...again...in the oil and gas fields.

RELATED:
Jones, who made his first fortune in energy before buying the Cowboys in 1989, has steadily built his stake in Comstock since 2018, investing hundreds of millions before this latest billion-dollar move. He’s betting big on a deep, untapped natural gas supply that could pay off in historic fashion.
But with the Cowboys giving up the most passing touchdowns in the league and sitting outside the playoff picture, many fans can’t help but notice: Jerry Jones seems to be drilling for gas instead of answers.
