Dalhart High School’s Yahir Cancio dies after head injury

According to reports, tragedy has struck in West Texas after the death of Yahir Cancino was confirmed. A junior varsity football player at Dalhart High School, Cancino died on Saturday after sustaining a head injury during a game against Sundown on Thursday night.

Those present, were subjected to terrible scenes as Cancino, a sophomore, lay unresponsive on the field after suffering the injury with seven minutes remaining on the clock in the fourth quarter. As per a press release from Dalhart Independent School District Superintendent Jeff Byrd, emergency medical personnel were unable to revive him on the field, so Cancino was subsequently airlifted to the nearby University Medical Center in Lubbock.

As the saying goes, ‘A parent should never have to bury a child.’ In a heartbreaking Facebook post on Saturday, Cancino’s mother, Araceli Hernandez, acknowledged the loss of her son’s life while taking time to thank the many messages of support that she has received since the awful event occurred. Additionally, she also indicated that her son’s organs will be donated.

“Thank you to the community of Dalhart and the Texas panhandle for all the prayers, the calls, text and messages but unfortunately Yahir passed from his injuries,” she wrote. “We ask for prayers for peace and healing not only for us but for all the people Yahir touched in his life. We have chosen to donate his organs because Yahir was always about helping people and we want to honor his memory.” Fittingly, Byrd also stated that Dalhart High School would not be participating in any sporting activities this coming weekend in a show of respect for Cancino and his family.
