How do players prepare for severe weather conditions?
American football played outdoors, is conditioned to withstand extreme weather conditions and low temperatures, like this weekend in Buffalo.

The Baltimore Ravens will travel to Buffalo to face the Bills in the Divisional Round of the AFC playoffs in the 2024 NFL season. The game will be one of the most exciting because the quarterbacks who, in addition to being candidates for the MVP of the regular season, chosen in the All-Pro teams of the league will face each other. Lamar Jackson, from the AFC North, was on the first team, while Josh Allen, from the AFC East, was on the league’s second unit of the regular season.
One factor to consider in the game at Highmark Stadium is the temperature at which the game will start. According to the National Weather Service, Sunday night is expected to have snow storms with temperatures around 7° F in the Orchard Park area. The probability of precipitation is 40 percent. During the day, there are indications for strong northwest winds, and ice rain is expected after 1:00 p.m. local time.
For John Harbaugh, the Ravens' head coach, it is important to prioritize work in the cold and all the elements that affect the game, such as the possibility of making field goals and running the ball quickly.
“We’ve been working a lot in the cold, a lot in the wind. The elements are part of it,” Harbaugh said at a press conference. “The other thing is going to be the footing on their field, we’re thinking about that as well. We want to make sure the field is walkable. It’s a grass field and it’s going to be hard and icy.”
The coldest game in NFL history
As an outdoor sport, American football is bound to be played in various weather conditions. Low temperatures are common among NFL games due to the calendar season.
The lowest recorded temperature in an NFL game was -13°F (-25°C) during the championship game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in the 1967 season, better known as the Ice Bowl. On the night of December 31, the winds picked up, and the wind chill was -48°F.
