Gonzalez field goal takes Commanders into Divisional round
Zane Gonzalez kicked a last-gasp field goal at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, as the six-seeded Commanders edged out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a 23-20 victory in the Wild Card round. The victory is Washington’s first in the postseason since a 17-10 Wild Card win in 2005 - also against Tampa Bay.
“I’m just a small part of a big plan,” Gonzalez told reporters after the Commanders’ triumph in Florida, per NBC Sports. “Credit to all the guys - offense, defense - for everything they’ve done today and throughout the season. It’s been truly wild and honestly it’s just fun to be a part of the ride.”
Who will Washington play next in the playoffs?
Washington’s Wild Card win sets up a Divisional round clash with the Detroit Lions, the No. 1 seed in the NFC, on Saturday.

When did the Commanders last win the Super Bowl? How many have they won?
A franchise that changed its name to the Commanders in 2022, Washington have three Super Bowl titles - and are in the midst of a 33-year wait for a fourth.
The team’s most recent victory in the NFL title game was back in the 1991 season, when the Buffalo Bills were beaten 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI in Minneapolis.
Known as the Redskins at the time of its Super Bowl triumphs, Washington also won the Lombardi Trophy twice in the 1980s. The team defeated the Denver Broncos 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII in 1987, five years after winning the event for the first time with a 27-17 triumph over the Miami Dolphins. In the pre-Super Bowl era, Washington also won NFL championships in 1937 and 1942
In all, the Commanders have appeared in five Super Bowls: the franchise was beaten by the Dolphins and the Los Angeles Raiders, respectively, in 1972 and 1983.
How many conference titles do the Commanders have?
Washington’s most recent Super Bowl win was also the last time the team clinched the conference title.
It was the Commanders' upcoming rivals that the team beat in the 1991 NFC Championship Game; indeed, the men from the capital blew the Lions away, winning 41-10 at RFK Stadium, their former home arena. Overall, the Commanders have five NFC titles to their name.
