Former New York Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones has been added to the active roster for the Minnesota Vikings ahead of Monday Night Football.

The Vikings’ Wild Card meeting with the LA Rams is one of the most finely poised of the first round of the postseason and Jones brings real experience to the roster. He recently ended a six-year spell with the Giants after slipping down the pecking order in 2024.

He was handed a huge four-year, $160 million extension ahead of the 2023 season but was benched last year, falling to third choice at QB. Jones earnt more than $108 million during his time with New York but entered free agency after being released in late 2024.

Jones has been on the Vikings' practice squad since signing him in Week 12. The 27-year-old signed a short-term contract with the Vikings, entitling him to a prorated allocation of the the veteran minimum of $1.125 million per year. But as he’s only recently joined, Jones will earn far less than that from his time in Minnesota.

If everything goes to plan, Jones will not be needed against the Rams. He is listed as the third choice for Kevin O’Connell, behind Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens. The Vikings will be hoping that Darnold can recapture his 2024 form after a tough outing against the Detroit Vikings last time out. Darnold has put up impressive figures this season but is yet to show that he can do it on the biggest occasion.

“This is the time,” Darnold said ahead of the Rams game. “Whether guys are in the league for a long time, whether they’ve been with the same team for a long time, whether they’re bouncing around the league... It’s kind of where legacies I guess are made. In the playoffs.”
