Is the New York Giants’ Daniel Jones out for the season after injuring his knee?

Another loss was the last thing the Giants needed, but the cost of it may just be much higher than first thought as their QB may have a serious injury.

On a record of 2-7, the New York Giants now sit at the bottom of the NFC East, and if reports prove to be true that could be the least of their problems as they now face the prospect of losing their starting signal caller for the foreseeable future due to injury.

Daniel Jones could be out

It’s hard not to feel some degree of sympathy for New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Having only recently returned to the starting lineup, Daniels now looks to be facing another long period on the sidelines. If you caught New York’s 30-9 Week 9 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, then you would have seen Jones go down in a heap on the first play of the second quarter. Though there didn’t appear to be any contact, it was clear that his knee was the problem. Jones did manage to get to his feet and then proceeded to walk a few paces but took to the ground once again. Shortly after he was removed from the game and replaced by backup Tommy DeVito

This is where things get serious. While sitting on the sideline, Jones could be head telling teammate Saquon Barkley that he didn’t know what happened. “It just buckled” he said. Following a period on the sidelines, Jones was taken to the medical tent after which he could be seen walking in the company of trainers to the locker room, but without assistance. Once the third quarter started, he was officially ruled out for the remainder of the game with a knee injury designation.

So, what’s the deal with Daniel Jones’ knee?

For the moment there has been no official diagnosis from the team, however, as seen above the Giants are fearing the worst, which is to say that the injury is in fact significant and could well be a torn ACL. The next step will be for the 26-year-old former Duke star to have an MRI on Monday at which point the severity of the injury will be confirmed.

Injury aside, Daniel Jones has got to improve

As sad as this is for both Jones and the Giants, there is the other side of the coin as well. As mentioned above, Jones had only just returned to the lineup after missing the last three games due to a neck injury that he suffered during Week 5′s loss to the Miami Dolphins. On that occasion, he was replaced by a combination of the above-mentioned DeVito and Tyrod Taylor. Unfortunately, Taylor is now on injured reserve following a rib injury earlier this week, meaning it will be DeVito to whom the Giants turn in full.

While it’s clearly not an ideal situation that the team now faces, it’s got to be said that regardless of injuries, Jones has simply not been playing well this season. Prior to leaving the game on Sunday with 4 of his 9 passes completed for 25 yards, Jones had completed 68.9% of his passes but at an average of only 5.9 yards per attempt - that’s the lowest of his career so far. There’s also the matter of interceptions i.e., he’s been picked on 4.0% of his passes - the highest mark of his career - while being sacked on an astonishing 15.6% of his dropbacks. It would be unfair to say that injuries have in no way hindered him, but his decline relative to the period of time has been significant. This is of course on the back of signing a four-year, $160 million deal this offseason to stay with the Giants. At this point, questions are going to be asked.
