Lawrence and Carr sit
Other than the start of football season, there was a lot to be excited about in the Hall of Fame Game. Last year’s first overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence following up a tough year, Derek Carr coming off one of his best seasons ever and Davante Adams making his debut in a Raiders jersey. Unfortunately none of that happened as both recently hired head coaches decided to reserve their stars until later in the preseason.

McDaniels returns home
The Raiders head football coach expressed how excited to be coaching in tonight’s game. Obviously there will be nerves and excitement to coach his first game in charge of the Las Vegas franchise, but what makes tonight even more special is Tom Benson Stadium is right across the street from the former Canton native’s high school. “You’re playing right there, and you can see it over the stands,” McDaniels said. “It was a great place to be a young boy that loved football and what a blessing that I have an opportunity to come back there and do it. I never would have dreamed that this would have happened.”

New names on the sidelines
After tough last season’s for both of these franchises Jacksonville and Las Vegas are under new direction. Both teams made midseason coaching changes, but neither of the interim coaches made it through the offseason. Josh McDaniels was appointed the new head football coach of the Raiders on January 31st. Doug Pederson takes over on the sidelines of the Jacksonville Jaguars after signing a deal on Feburary 4th of this year. Both coaches have head coaching experience, and Pederson won it all with Philadelphia in 2017.
TRAVIS ETIENNE
Travis Etienne had a disastrous rookie campaign. He was injured in the second preseason game and was ruled out indefinitely with a Lisfranc injury. Shortly after it was revealed he had a significant tear in his foot which would need surgery meaning Etienne’s season was over almost before it got started.
DAVANTE ADAMS
Aaron Rodgers’ former favorite target Davante Adams has a change of scenery after being traded to the Raiders this offseason. Adams is a five time Pro Bowler who caught 123 passes for 1,553 and 11 touchdowns last season with the Green Bay Packers. Adams is evidently excited about working with Raiders QB Derek Carr. He made headlines over the last couple weeks when he compared Carr to Rodgers, and suggested Carr is a Hall of Famer.
TREVOR LAWRENCE OUT
Last year’s number one overall draft pick, Trevor Lawrence spent most of last season scrambling for his life as the Jags offense fluttered for much of the year. Lawrence did end up having some nice games later in the season and ended his rookie campaign with 3,641 yard passing and 12 TDs to go along with his 17 INT. All eyes will be on the second-year signal caller who is under the direction of a proven NFL coach. But that anticipation will grow even more after Pederson’s decision to sit Lawrence in the first preseason game.
RAIDERS LAST SEASON
Despite everything that went on during the regular season, the Las Vegas Raiders made the postseason for the first time since making the move from Vegas to Sin City. The first hurdle to get through was the resigning of their head coach Jon Gruden after emails of his using racist, homophobic and mysogynistic was found in emails he had sent years earlier. The Raiders made the playoffs on the last snap of the last play of the season against division rival, the Los Angeles Chargers.
Jags last season
The Jaguars had a season to forget in 2021. After drafting Trevor Lawrence and Trevor Etienne in the first round of last year’s Draft, but the young Jaguars struggled mightily even with the former Clemson stars. Former head coach Urban Meyer didn’t survive the entirety of the season after various incidents including some racy videos posted on social media of Meyer and some college coeds, and an allegation of the head coach kicking place kicker Josh Lambo. By the season’s end Jacksonville had an interim coach, and won just three games.
