J.J. Watt rips media for “insane and ridiculous” NFL training camp coverage
Former NFL All-Pro J.J. Watt is criticized the media for their coverage of training camp in a rant that’s gone viral.
Former NFL defensive end J.J. Watt now works in sports media after 12 years in the league. He’s set to be an in-game analyst on CBS Sports alongside Ian Eagle for the 2025-26 season.
But before the season’s even started, Watt is fed up with the media for the way they’re reporting training camp stats.
Watt to media: Stop misleading fans
Watt criticized the media for reporting training camp stats out of context, calling them “insane and ridiculous”. In a rant he posted to X, he argued these sessions are meant for experimentation and growth, not performance metrics.
“It could be a strictly 3rd & Long blitz period where every play is skewed to the defenses advantage,” Watt wrote. “Coaches could be asking the QB to focus specifically on one route concept. DLine may be focusing only on bull rushes one day or just speed rushes for one period.”
Watt stressed that failure is part of the learning process and warned fans not to overreact to early camp reports.
“Practice is for practicing. You’re supposed to fail. You’re supposed to try new things, see what works and what doesn’t work, etc. If you only do what works, you’ll never grow, adapt, change.”
His comments were widely supported in sports media circles. Now a CBS analyst, Watt is bringing his candid perspective to his new role.
