Liam Coen’s debut season as a fully-fledged NFL head coach has been pretty impressive - and there could still be more surprises to come. Coen’s Jaguars ended the regular season with a 13–4 record and as winners of the AFC South.

And to think Coen almost didn’t end up in Jacksonville... He was one of 10 candidates on the Jaguars shortlist. Bizarrely, in January 2025, he passed off an approach by the franchise, instead, agreeing to sign a lucrative extension with the Buccaneers where he had been working as an offensive coordinator under Todd Bowles. Coen didn’t immediately sign the contract then the situation took a new turn.

But when Jacksonville fired general manager Trent Baalke, Coen flew out to hold talks with Shad Khan, who persuade him to backtrack on his decision and accept the coaching post.

On January 24, 2025, Coen signed a five-year contract - the financial details of which were not disclosed at the time but according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the coach earns an average of around $12 million per year.

At 40, he is the fifth youngest head coach currently working in the league and the youngest to occupy the role in Jacksonville’s history.
