Now rivals but always friends, Cowboys star’s affectionate message to Rush after his departure to the Ravens
Rush may not have been a franchise quarterback, but he was always ready when needed, and it was clearly something his teammate never failed to appreciate.

Cooper Rush’s time in Dallas came to an end on Sunday, but his bond with Dak Prescott appears to remain as strong as ever. After nearly eight years with the Cowboys, the veteran quarterback has signed a two-year contract worth up to $12.2 million with the Baltimore Ravens.
And as Rush embarks on this next chapter, Prescott made sure to publicly acknowledge his longtime teammate’s contributions.
Cooper Rush’s legacy in Dallas
Rush may have spent most of his time as a backup, but when called upon, he delivered.

He first stepped up in 2022, leading the Cowboys to four straight wins when Prescott suffered a fractured thumb. His performance that season - completing 58% of his passes for 1,051 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions - cemented his reputation as a dependable presence in the quarterback room. Then, in 2024, when Prescott’s season was cut short by a hamstring injury, Rush once again took over. He started eight games, guiding the team to a 4-4 record while throwing for 1,844 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Despite these efforts, the writing was on the wall for Rush’s departure, when, in Week 18, the Cowboys benched Rush in favor of Trey Lance, effectively denying Rush the final start he needed to trigger a $250,000 incentive.
Next quarterback for Cowboys
With Rush gone, Prescott’s backup situation is murky at best. Lance, the former first-round pick acquired last season, is now a free agent. That leaves Will Grier, a third-round pick from 2019, as the only other quarterback on the roster.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has hinted that the team will look to the upcoming NFL Draft in April for a young quarterback, but given Prescott’s recent injury history, that plan may not inspire much confidence with fans who feel they could do with some good news sooner rather than later.

Dak’s 3-word farewell message to Cooper
Following the news of Rush’s move, Prescott took to Instagram, sharing a post that announced the signing.
Over an image of Rush in his Cowboys uniform, Prescott added a simple but heartfelt message: “Thank you Brother ❤️.” It was a small but meaningful gesture that seems to encapsulate the respect and gratitude between the two quarterbacks.
