Panthers float an unprecedented deal for disgruntled rookie

It’s rare for NFL rookies to be traded before the season begins - especially a first-round pick. But it may just happen with Bengals’ Shemar Stewart.

Update:

The Cincinnati Bengals chose defensive end Shemar Stewart as their first-round draft pick this year - 17th overall. But he’s yet to sign a contract, stuck in a bizarre dispute with the team. And if they don’t come to an agreement soon, Stewart could request a trade. And if he does, Bleacher Report suggests it may be the Carolina Panthers who end up snagging him.

Unprecedented move for the disgruntled rookie?

It’s rare for a rookie to be traded before the season begins, but a first-round pick being traded before the season is unprecedented.

In BR’s scenario, they have the Panthers giving the Bengals linebacker D.J. Wonnum plus two future draft picks in exchange for Stewart. While Carolina did manage to gain some new pass rushers in the draft, they could look to elevate the defense even further with the addition of Stewart.

However, it’s not yet clear if the Bengals are actually seriously considering trading Stewart, who is considered a high-ceiling prospect. But until they can come to an agreement on the contract, Stewart isn’t going to make things easy for them, which could result in an unprecedented trade.
