Pat McAfee incredibly impressed by unlikely NFL playoff team: “It’s the best time to figure out how to play football”

Looking ahead at the Divisional round fixtures in the 2025 NFL playoffs, Pat McAfee has picked out one unexpected contender.

Can the Rams win a Super Bowl?

The LA Rams were forced to relocate their NFL Wild Card game to State Farm Stadium in Arizona but that didn’t knock Sean McVay’s team off their stride, brushing aside the Minnesota Vikings 27-9.

The Vikings finished the regular season with a 14-3 record but they were overpowered by the Rams on Monday, with quarterback Sam Darnold suffering a NFL postseason-record nine sacks. Little was expected of the Rams after a shaky start to the 2024 season but Pat McAfee was full of praise for the team’s performance in the Vikings demolition.

I’m so incredibly impressed by this squad,” he said on The Pat McAfee Show. “There’s no way you’re supposed to win these playoff games but they do, they have something about them.”

“Sean McVay has something about him where his teams are ready to play in the biggest moments. And this team has got hot of late, it’s the best time to figure out how to play football.

Now in his eighth season with the Rams, McVay has shown himself to be a resilient and brilliant young coach. He led the team to a Super Bowl LVI triumph and managed to negotiate the loss of key players in the following season. He has an 8-4 postseason record with the Rams, highlighting his ability to peak at the business end of the season. Still only 38 years old, McVay is already eyeing a second championship ring as a head coach.

Monday’s victory was built upon a brilliant defensive showing but the Rams also boast a top QB talent in Matthew Stafford. The 36-year-old was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and he spent more than a decade with the Detroit Lions before making the switch to the Rams in 2021. Stafford has already tasted Super Bowl success and Pat McAfee isn’t ruling out the chance of a second this season.

McAfee said: “The Rams are dangerous and none of us would have ever expected this. But I guess you should never rule out Matt Stafford, ever.”
