Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs want to win the AFC West again

The Kansas City Chiefs have won the AFC West the past six seasons, but this year the division is the toughest without question the toughest in the league.

Update:

The Kansas City Chiefs have not had a losing record since Andy Reid took over as head coach in 2013. They will look to keep that streak alive while winning the AFC West, which looks like it will be the toughest division in the league.

New look Chiefs offense

Since 2016, they have had a stranglehold on the AFC West, winning the division six straight times. No team has dominated the West the way the Chiefs have since the Raiders, between 1972 and 1976, and Broncos, between 2011 and 2015.

This season, the Chiefs’ offense will look different. They still have Patrick Mahomes who is one of the best, if not the best, quarterback in the AFC. Mahomes lost some of his favorite weapons over the offseason and will not have the deep threat of Tyreek Hill or with Byron Pringle in the slot. To replace them, the Kansas City team signed JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Defense didn’t cut it last season

If there was one weak spot of the Chiefs last season, it was their defense. They were the sixth worst in terms of yards allowed with 368.9 per game, so this offseason team executives focused on reinforcing it during the offseason with the cornerback Trent McDuffie and defensive end George Karlaftis in the first round of the Draft. They lost safety Tyrann Mathieu in free agency, but replaced him with Justin Reid, from the Houston Texans.

One of the drawbacks to maintaining their reign in the AFC West is that the Chiefs will have the fifth toughest schedule in the entire NFL. The good news is that projections forecast Kansas CIty winning 10 games this year.
