Sean McDermott fired by Bills: what was his Buffalo contract: salary and years left?

As Buffalo Bills fans wake up on Monday morning, still trying to get over their team’s 33-30 Divisional Round OT loss to the Denver Broncos, they were met with the news that head coach Sean McDermott had been fired. As he gave his final words, some were asking about his contract.

What was Sean McDermott‘s Bills contract?

Since McDermott joined the Buffalo Bills in 2017, he’s taken them to eight postseasons (out of nine), and they’ve become one of the top teams in the league. The problem is that of those eight trips, none turned into a Super Bowl berth. Still, McDermott is a good head coach, and he was a lot of the reason those top players on the team were able to shine.

How Sean McDermott’s extension shaped the Bills

Back in June 2023, the Bills announced that both general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott had signed extensions through the 2027 season. At the time, the move was celebrated as a sign of stability for one of the NFL’s most consistent franchises. As we entered the 2025–26 season, those deals looked even more significant.

Beane and McDermott, who arrived together in 2017, have become one of the NFL’s most respected GM–coach tandems. They snapped Buffalo’s 17-year playoff drought in their first season and have since kept the team in contention year after year.

Since signing their extensions, the Bills have added to their résumé: multiple AFC East titles, deep playoff runs, and a roster that remains one of the most balanced in football. McDermott continued to lean on a defense that has ranked among the league’s best under his watch, while Beane’s roster-building - highlighted by drafting and extending stars like Josh Allen, Matt Milano, and Ed Oliver - had seemed to keep Buffalo’s championship window open. Until Saturday.

McDermott’s efforts are reported to be earning him an annual salary of around $8 million, with his current contract running through the 2027 season. The pressure was on McDermott to turn regular-season success into a Super Bowl appearance. Now we know that it won’t come to fruition.
