Shedeur on the bubble: Browns rookie QB could be cut before season starts
Shedeur Sanders went from first-round projection to the infamous fifth-round draft slide to now potentially facing a cut before the season even starts.
Shedeur Sanders may have been drafted by the Cleveland Browns, but there’s no guarantee the former Colorado star will be on the 53-man roster come Week 1.
The Browns’ quarterback room is crowded, featuring:
- Deshaun Watson (unlikely to start - returning from injury)
- Joe Flacco (likely Week 1 starter)
- Kenny Pickett (acquired via trade)
- Dillon Gabriel (3rd-round rookie)
- Shedeur Sanders (5th-round rookie)
Shedeur in danger of being waived despite strong camp
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo emphasized that teams don’t carry four QBs on the active roster, meaning either Sanders or Gabriel could be waived, potentially claimed by another team in what Garafolo called “a second draft.”
“Training camp is going to be so important,” said Garafolo. “Which of those rookies can put stuff on tape that makes it hard for the Browns to let them go?”
Even with strong preseason play, Sanders may still land 4th on the depth chart, likely leading to a cut or practice squad assignment. that is, if he clears waivers.
Though the Browns liked Sanders enough to draft him, his roster status is far from certain. His best shot to stick around: outplay Dillon Gabriel and make a strong preseason case.
