Shedeur Sanders is complicating everything in Cleveland… and that’s a good thing for the Browns coaching staff

The quarterback room in Cleveland is crowded with possibilities, but with a potential No. 1 pick on the line next year, things get complicated.

Update:

The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback room is crowded, uncertain, and -thanks in part to Shedeur Sanders - becoming a complicated puzzle for the coaching staff to solve. But in a strange way, that confusion may be exactly what the Browns need.

Sanders, the Browns’ fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, arrived in Cleveland with plenty of name recognition but lower expectations. Now, just a few weeks into training camp, he’s not lighting it up (and is even dealing with reported arm soreness), but his presence alone is throwing a wrench into the Browns’ long-term plans. And for a team trying to find a path forward, that wrinkle may be more valuable than it seems.

Why Sanders’ unknowns aren’t a bad thing for the Browns

Right now, the Browns are widely expected to be among the league’s worst teams again this season. Analyst Jacob Infante of “Pro Football Network” has already projected Cleveland to land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and use it on a true franchise quarterback, like Texas standout Arch Manning.

That kind of prediction seems to assume the Browns are starting fresh next year. After all, Cleveland didn’t invest heavily in either of their 2025 rookie quarterbacks. Dillon Gabriel came in the third round; Sanders in the fifth. On paper, neither has the draft capital that signals a long-term commitment.

But here’s where it gets complicated.

The Browns coaching staff can’t just skip ahead to next April. They still have a season to coach. They still have quarterbacks to develop. And as long as Shedeur Sanders is on the roster, they have to keep evaluating him. Is he a long-term backup? A potential starter? A trade chip? Or just a temporary body? Every rep he takes, even if inconsistent, adds another layer to that conversation.

That’s the tension at the heart of Cleveland’s quarterback situation. Sanders isn’t playing well enough to seize control, but he’s also not irrelevant enough to ignore. And that “gray area” is forcing the Browns’ staff to think carefully about how they manage the position room, allocate reps, and weigh future decisions. And that’s actually a good thing.

Because for a franchise still rebuilding its identity, having tough choices is better than having none. Sanders might not be the answer, but the fact that Cleveland has to ask the question means they’re being pushed to consider all possibilities. That competition, that uncertainty, that pressure to evaluate is healthy. It sharpens the staff. It keeps the front office honest. It prevents them from writing off a player before his story is finished.

Whether Sanders is traded, benched, or develops into something more, his presence is disrupting a room that desperately needed shaking up.

So yes, Shedeur Sanders is complicating everything in Cleveland. And for a team still searching for clarity, that complication might be the best thing to happen to them all year.
