The San Francisco 49ers have a rich tradition of great wide receivers, but recently one of their former WRs went after another one of their former WRs.

Update:

It’s been a while since Terrell Owens has been in the NFL spotlight, but if there is something that T.O. has always been good at it’s getting in front of a microphone and dropping some gems for the media to latch on to.

T.O. didn’t bite tongue when talking Deebo

Owens was one of the best receivers of his generation, and what he may have lacked in soft hands he made up for with his route running and his incredible physique. He played for the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles when he was in his prime, and in that time he was named to six Pro Bowls and made the NFL’s First Team All Pro five times.

At 51, he still looks like he could line up and catch passes in the NFL, which may or may not give him the right for sounding off on a former San Francisco 49er wide receiver. Deebo Samuel was dealt from the Niners to the Washington Commanders, and in his first days as a Commander Samuel came under criticism as many people speculated that he was enjoying the offseason a little too much.

The first images we saw of Samuel in a Commanders uniform looked a bit off, and it wasn’t just because he wasn’t wearing a Niners helmet. As Owens put it, “He about two chicken nuggets from tipping the scale.”

Deebo moves to D.C.

Owens, who later said, “Deebo’s my guy though. I love Deebo,” came under scrutiny for body shaming the Commanders new wide receiver. One of the people coming to the defense of Deebo was retired Miami offensive lineman Tarron Armstead who went on his podcast and said, “I respect players. I’m never going to be one of them guys and just be taking shots at players. If we gonna talk football, let’s talk football. I don’t like it bro…. Don’t just be throwing shots at a player for no reason.”

The Hall of Fame WR has never shied away from controversial statements or actions. At the same time, Samuel has always been a stocky, bulldog sort of receiver with a low center of gravity that doesn’t mind lining up in the backfield and taking some handoffs. Even since he was in college, that was his profile and that’s how he played.

Last year was a tough one for Deebo and the Niners. He did admit that he bulked up from 215 to 225 last year, but that led to one of his least productive seasons in the NFL. He had 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns as the Niners went 6-11 and missed the playoffs. Now he is looking to reinvent himself with the high flying Commanders offense led by Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels.
