The next NFL record Patrick Mahomes is set to break by the end of September
Chiefs quarterback Mahomes is closing fast on another NFL milestone, currently held by Steelers’ star Aaron Rodgers.
Patrick Mahomes is considered by most to be the best quarterback of his generation, which comes with the territory when you have broken as many records as the Kansas City Chiefs star.
Since making his NFL debut on December 27, the 29-year-old has hit multiple passing yards and passing touchdown milestones faster than any quarterback in league history. Now, he is closing in on a record currently held by new Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Aaron Rodgers’ record to be broken
Rodgers, 41, became only the fifth player in NFL history to reach 500 regular-season touchdown passes last year. He needed 121 games to hit 250 touchdowns, the fewest of any quarterback. That record is now under serious threat.
Mahomes has registered 245 touchdown passes in 112 regular-season games, meaning he needs just six more in his next nine appearances to break Rodgers’ mark.
When could Patrick Mahomes claim the record?
History suggests there is no chance of the three-time Super Bowl champion and MVP missing out. Mahomes has thrown 62 touchdowns in 23 regular-season games in September, averaging 2.7 per game.
If he maintains that pace, Mahomes could set the record when the Chiefs host the Eagles in Week 2 (September 14) or when they visit the Giants in Week 3 (September 21). If necessary, he would get a third opportunity before the month ends, when Kansas City face the Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium on September 28.
