Update:

Sports data company Genius Sports will continue to provide the stats behind the NFL and the NCAA for years to come after signing major deals with the leagues.

Genius Sports first began collecting and distributing NFL play-by-play statistics in 2021, broadening the suite of tools on offer. That data is now available through the Next Gen Stats platform, which introduces advanced statistics for the first time.

The data collected by Genius Sports is then provided to media companies, making it a key part of the incredible array of data included in live broadcasts. The statistics are also shared with sports betting operators and used to dictate markets.

Such is the interest in the NFL that Genius Sports pays a huge sum for the privilege of being the league’s official data partner. The size of the new deal is not yet confirmed but the previous six-year deal was worth $120 million.

The new contract adds a further four years to the agreement and is likely to be even more lucrative.

The NFL deal comes shortly after Genius Sports penned a similar deal with the NCAA. As such, Genius Sports will provide data regarding the NCAA’s men’s and women’s postseason basketball tournaments. The NCAA agreement runs through 2032.
