Update:

The Los Angeles Rams made a massive statement about the importance of elite cornerbacks Sunday. Just days after acquiring star defensive back Trent McDuffie in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles agreed to a four-year, $124 million contract extension with the 25-year-old cornerback.

The deal includes $100 million guaranteed and carries an average annual value of $31 million, making McDuffie the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

The extension resets the cornerback market and places McDuffie ahead of several other young defensive stars who recently signed massive deals of their own.

The highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL

With McDuffie now setting the standard, here’s how the top of the cornerback salary market currently looks:

  1. Trent McDuffie: $31 million per year - Los Angeles Rams
  2. Sauce Gardner: $30.1 million - Indianapolis Colts
  3. Derek Stingley Jr.: $30 million - Houston Texans
  4. Jalen Ramsey: $24.1 million - Miami Dolphins
  5. Jaire Alexander: $21 million - Green Bay Packers

McDuffie’s contract pushes the market forward by nearly a full million dollars per season over Gardner’s deal. The guaranteed money is just as significant. McDuffie’s $100 million guaranteed surpasses the previous cornerback mark set by Stingley’s $89 million.

Where McDuffie ranks among the NFL’s highest-paid players

While McDuffie now sits at the top of the cornerback market with a $31 million annual salary, quarterbacks still dominate the NFL’s overall pay scale.

The highest-paid player in the league is Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys, whose contract averages $60 million per year after signing a four-year, $240 million extension in 2024.

Other quarterbacks close behind include Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, both of whom average about $55 million annually.

Even so, McDuffie’s new deal places him among the highest-paid defensive players in football and shows how valuable elite coverage corners have become in today’s pass-heavy NFL.

A homecoming for the Rams’ new star

McDuffie’s move to Los Angeles also carries a personal element. The All-Pro cornerback is a Southern California native who finished high school at St. John Bosco High School before starring in college and eventually becoming a first-round NFL draft pick.

Last year, McDuffie even mentioned the Rams as a dream destination if he ever left Kansas City, noting that playing in Los Angeles would allow his family to attend every game. Now that scenario has become reality.

Why the Rams made the move

Cornerback was a major need for the Rams entering the offseason. Several players at the position were approaching free agency, and veteran corner Darious Williams recently announced his retirement. By trading for McDuffie and immediately locking him up long term, the Rams secured one of the NFL’s most versatile defensive backs.

Since entering the league, McDuffie has built a reputation as a complete defensive weapon. In 56 career games, he has recorded three interceptions, 34 pass breakups, 5.5 sacks, and 246 tackles. He was also named first-team All-Pro in 2023, cementing his status as one of the league’s premier cornerbacks.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, McDuffie has allowed just 6.0 yards per target over the past two seasons, the third-best mark among defensive backs with at least 150 targets.

Now, with a record-setting contract in place, the Rams are betting that production will continue, and that their newest defensive star will anchor their secondary for years to come.
