With Super Bowl LVIII fast approaching, excitement is growing for the big day.

Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of Super Bowl LIV back in 2020. All eyes will be on Allegiant Stadium on Sunday and that makes it the most valuable piece of advertising real estate in the business.

Every year a succession of global stars are wheeled out to appear in lavish advertisements and this time will be no different. Lionel Messi stars alongside Jason Sudeikis and Dan Marino in an ad for beer brand Michelob Ultra.

In the 90-second commercial Messi strolls up to a beachfront bar and orders the aforementioned beverage, only to find that the barrel is empty. Rather that choose a different drink, the Argentine decides to wait for the barrel to be changed and takes the time to show off his footwork on the beach.

At one point he plays a long-range give-and-go with NFL icon Marino, who is watching from an off-shore yacht. Actor Sudeikis, in character as soccer coach Ted Lasso, remarks on Messi’s talents as he slaloms across the sand.

Super Bowl ad Messi’s latest commercial deal

Within the world of soccer Lionel Messi has a reputation as a fairly private, even introverted, figure. But the Argentine certainly isn’t shy when it comes to his commercial dealings and he has built up an astonishing list of major endorsements.

His longest and largest deal is with sports manufacture Adidas, with whom he has been signed since his early days as a professional. In 2016 he signed a long-term deal with Adidas that is thought to be worth around $1 billion in total.

Messi’s commercial ties go far beyond sportswear and he has been the face of major campaign for the likes of Pepsi, Gillette and Turkish Airlines. In 2023 Forbes valued his off-field endorsements at $65 million per year.

Most recently he linked up with Hard Rock Cafe to present a new children’s menu. Company chairman Jim Allen said of the partnership: “We know how much children and their parents’ alike look up to Leo”.
