What did Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones say about defensive end Sam Williams’ arrest?

While it’s understandable that the franchise owner didn’t throw his player under the bus, his take on the DE’s recent infraction definitely turned heads.

It’s no secret that players in the NFL commonly run afoul of the law, but what is less common is to see apparent allowances or rather excuses made for them when they do. Even more so when such moves or comments come directly from the head of the organization.

Jerry Jones sees progress in Sam Williams’ discipline

If you missed it over the weekend, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams was reportedly arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Worse yet, is that it was not the first time since joining the Cowboys that Williams has had to answer to law enforcement officials. Back in December, Williams was unfortunately involved in a two-car accident that resulted in an arrest warrant after it was determined that Williams was driving at approximately 98mph. It’s worth noting that the accident led to both Williams and another individual having to be taken to hospital. For their part the Cowboys did not immediately comment on Williams’ arrest, however, franchise owner Jerry Jones offered his take, and let’s just say it left a few scratching their heads. See for yourself below:

“Well first of all, I’m seeing that he is as - which is more often the case than not - this sounds a little hollow - but he does and is...maturing,” Jones said. “And he is. What was he going, 66 miles an hour? So he’s 34 miles an hour less this year than he was last year. 98 to 66. So that’s improvement.”

Is Jerry Jones for real?

Now, there are two ways to look at Jones’ comments. On one side, we could say that the Cowboys’ owner is simply having a little fun at the expense of the media, in that he knows full well that Williams’ actions were not OK, to say the least. This of course would require us to ignore the controlled substance and weapon charges, something which Jones by his comments appears to have done in the name of a joke. Personally, I’d take that route. On the other hand, if Jones is pointing to the lower speed at which Willimas was driving as a sign of progress, then perhaps we have a problem. Either way, the 24-year-old is actually a decent player as his 22 tackles, four sacks, and three fumble recoveries across 15 games demonstrate. That’s to say if the former Ole Miss product can’t get it together, it would be a shame.
